Bland's point is this: People simply do not appreciate or value, by and large, something/anything that is given to them by strangers. They generally do not value things that they have not invested themselves into: their time, their energy, their effort.

That's the problem that has be dealt with before any amount of money will fix anything. They have got to put more of themselves into it than what they receive from outside. Otherwise it will simply be wasted, it will be "unreal" to them. The scales have to be tipped more in the direction of what they are doing themselves, for themselves, than of what is being done for them.
