I do not believe the problem in our inner cities is like the middle East- unless we make it that way by believing it is. We certainly could make it as intractable by refusing to try to solve it.

I should have finished the story.

They were saying that people had relegated the Middle East to the mess category because Barak had offered more in the peace deal than he could probably sell to his own side and still Arafat turned it down. The conclusion was that containment would have to do until there was a new generation of Palestinian leadership that really wanted peace. Then maybe the Middle East could be moved from the mess column into the problem column.

The problem we're talking about here is partly a race problem and partly a class problem. The current leadership came into its position when it was mainly a race problem. They pushed away their Jewish allies after the initial victories because they wanted to proceed their own way. And they're still thinking the old way and want more money to advance things the old way. Maybe we can move this out of the mess column when the old guard is gone.

We've talked on this thread before about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We talked about that in the context of the war on drugs. When you post about throwing more money at this problem, it sounds to many people like throwing good money after bad. I don't think you'll get much support for that.
