I have used Scottrade as well. However, I have and am moving money over to Benjamin and Jerold Discount Brokerage. They let you do leap spreads, etc. in both non-IRA and IRA accounts.

For example, on Friday, I bought 3 NTAP 2003 50 strike leaps and sold 3 NTAP 60 march calls. The leap strike at 50 is as low as they go.
