If it is true it means we need to do a great deal more for these communities than even I anticipated. However, whatever he may think of the culture of the inner city, black children show up in kindergarten year after year after year, most of them respect it enough to go, and they go for a long time- You don't really see them drop out until middle school- they've given the system quite a while for it to fail them before they give up. We, as a society, have the chance to do something for them while they are young. There are not nearly enough head start programs for these kids, for example- we could catch them and help them from preschool (actually we could help them prenatally) and we could give them the kind of education that makes a person respect education. It hasn't been tried- and I don't think it is an outrageous suggestion.
