I think we all occasionally generalize based on race. That is racism. From my observation people say things like black people...such and such, or Asian people are ...such and such, saying they are better or worse at something. This is prejudice (a preconceived idea) based on race. Now when we really think about it (not everybody does) we may restate- and say of course I was only talking about some individuals- but our impulse is to overgeneralize. And racism does NOT require that you act on it, neither does prejudice. You are using the word as if definition 2 were it's exclusive meaning- this is not so.
