James,

I love the way you bring all the reality about Amazon to my attention. I am being serious since I will be busy this week looking at some firms with real potential and profits. I am in San Francisco. I have been here for five hours. I discovered I need to get in better walking shape although that truly is not a new discovery for me<G> Those long hours at the computer kind of makes one a bit soft.

I passed a variety of the home offices of a lot of the high tech firms on the way from the airport to the hotel. That is a change of pace for me since in my home area, we have none of these.

I will tell you what does surprise me. The hotel in which I am staying has dial-up access. That may be due to it not being a real high priced hotel. I brought a cat 5 cable for ethernet cable access since I do travel to New York a lot and every hotel there offers that. My first thought was that would be the case here. The hotels in New York usually have a cat 5 cable in the room in the event one does not have one. I was not sure about here which w2as my reason for bringing one. I am using AOL which my subscription there is bring your own service. I do not subscribe to a national dial-up carrier due to the availablity of cable in my home town and a DSL access in my stores. This costs a whopping $2.50/hour which is nothing but i have not used dial-up in maybe more than a year. What a difference. Yick. It seems broadband needs to get off the floor. I know it takes a lot of capital investment but the difference is tremendous.

I have my Palm Pilot, a flashlight, an in room bar. I can't think of anything else I am missing well one thing but it does not belong on the thread-);

I just wish to comment again about Amazon. Most of the reporting is focusing on the non performa numbers but they mostly seem to believe that with some cost cutting Amazon will survive. I do not believe that is quite true. Amazon needs to go back to being a books, music and video vendor. There is very little need for inventory with these products but it is cost effective for the best sellers. The next retailing problem is the cost of leasing all those unecessary distribution centers. Two will suffice one in the east and one in the west and of course one in each of the overseas respective markets. The leases on the extra 8 centers in the US are ten year leases. The only way to terminate them early is to file a re-organization under Chapter 11. Those extra centers are now a mistakie. Then Amazon can issue additional equity (shares) to eliminate the debt and they will survive in that form. My opinion is Bezos should get started on that prior to the holiday season of 2001 but I believe his ego will not permit it.

I wish he would read some of my posts. I truly belive that this is an area I understand. That is not the case in most every other area I sad to say. My solution for him is viable (granted painful), wise and the best for his share holders. Bezos himself hascashed out enough money he will never need to worry. There are times in the business world to realize one is wrong and to take the steps to salvage and create a viable business.
