OT re: Amazon.

If it is not in-stock I have found the Amazon quotes are marked up wildly. Check for Eudaemonic Pie at Barnes and Noble on-line. That's where my wife found The Golden Helix, Her-2/neu, and _____ (the Vertex story) all at the jacket price for Christmas gifts, for me. By the way, I'm lovin' those recommendations which were made right here last fall.

BTW, the new book on Folkman is reviewed in today's NYT book section.

<<The first "beating roulette" story>>

I think I remember some "studies" about "beating roulette".

Most are based on calculating not the number but the quadrant where the ball is going to fall.

May be that is the reason the numbers in the roulette are out of sequence and some people carry cards showing the numbers on each quadrant <g>

If you can figure the quadrant correctly you can turn the odds on the player's favor<g>

Some years ago there was also a picture (B&W)of some navy men that were set to win playing the roulette in Monte Carlo. They were using the computer on a destroyer anchored off shore and transmitting the numbers they should bet by light signals to a sailor in a balcony, which in turn relayed the numbers to the one placing the bets.
