One of the first things bland noticed when he began posting in cyberspace (on Yahoo, originally) was how dreadfully, crashingly serious so many posters were about it. About themselves, particularly, and about sacrosanct their words and opinions were.

Bland adopted the third person as a bit of wry satire on that curious phenomenon. He has typically used it as a way to poke fun at himself rather than at others...which is so, so common on message boards everywhere. He uses it as a way to keep his real self in perspective. "Bland" actually *is* a third person. He's a creation. He has a mission and purpose. He is used for a specific end.

It began as a satire on pretentiousness. Now it has assumed a quasi-life of its own, one that bland's creator has grown quite fond of. Naturally it loses a little bit of its original flavor and whimsey when bland attempts to be serious himself.

Hopefully that helps.
