That's the key. I don't yet feel as though I want to commit to a dedicated line to a particular broker, all though there are exceedingly good reasons to do so. One, for instance, being losing several thousand dollars because the Sprintlink-UUNet access point going down to a misconfiguration. :)

I don't begrudge these incidents, but they are part of the price I pay for not having installed a dedicated line to my broker.

$900/mo is not a great price to pay if your trading patterns have a higher risk of loss due to Internet unreliability. Although, having made that commitment to a broker, it makes it all the more sour when they fail to live up to their end of the bargain...

Cheers,

Simon.

Yes, in principle I agree that standard DSL service is not as 'reliable' as what is promised from Frame Relay.

As a practical matter, when my DSL provider is not having server problems :-), there are few interruptions in service that are internet related, and latency is quite small 99% of the time. This costs me $49 a month and its available even cheaper from other providers.

As far as actual response time to trades, there is no practical difference in performance, as I get instantaneous fills and cancels. My orders show up on L2 in under a second, using 3 different firms.

Now, is Frame Relay at $900 (10k a year) a good for 100% uptime without any 'internet issues'? If so, and you are a heavy player, then this may be a worthy investment. For the typical daytrader it's overkill.

so let's pay 900/mth for frame relay and use a broker that is costing me more than that a month on crappy software

i think that's what i've heard.

if frame relay is that important to someone than a good broker should be even more important

otherwise switch to DSL or cable
