During Sprint's last conference call it was stated that cdma2000 is 3.5times as efficient as WCDMA.

The best comparison I've seen comes from a presentation Irwin Jacobs did back in September (SABEW) where he compared WCDMA to 1x, and also to 1x + HDR . In the example he compared 10 MHz of spectrum, i.e., 2 WCDMA carriers vs 7 1x carriers. The 7 1x carriers are clearly more efficient for both voice and data. He also described how you can get much greater efficiency by varying the number of 1x vs HDR channels, depending on the requirements of voice vs data.

The comparison is explained starting at timemark 31:50 in the presentation. It describes the chart on the slide titled "Voice vs. Data Throughput Comparison". Entire presentation highly recommended if you haven't already listened to it.
