Do you remember what MArtin Luther King said? He said something to the effect that the virulent racists you could see, you knew who they were- but the people of good will, who never the less were racist, and might not even know it, were the most dangerous to real progress. I am still looking for the quote I remember- but here is another one along the same lines: Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.

Exactly. If there are "child molestors" and "especially bad child molestors", how does someone being called a "child molestor" for tickling their baby realize that you don't mean they are an "especially bad child molestor"? Even if you explain it afterwards, you have still created a lot of damage that your explanation is not going to ameliorate very effectively.
