The relationship was formed to counter SAP/Commerce One's integrated supply chain/procurement suite story. However, there is no compelling reason to buy supply chain software and procurement software all at once. Most companies need both but they don't necessarily need to make both decisions at the same time. The i2/Ariba relationship therefore hasn't been winning deals together. i2 thinks they can do Ariba's procurement piece although i2's products are weak in actual internet-based commerce. Ariba has its sights set on non-supply chain value added services. i2 is in a current suite spot. Ariba needs to get some more product to market for their next leg of growth. The i2/Ariba relationship isn't significant anymore and hasn't been for some time. The investment community knows this. I guess reporters still haven't figured it out.
