albert, Jonathan Joseph of SSB continues to ignore positive signs in the microprocessor industry.
From the Salomon Smith Barney report you quoted:

AMD# (AMD-$24, 2S) processor prices remained flat for the third week in a row.

We all know that Athlon prices have been rising in the DIY market, which is a good proxy
for the spot market.
What parallel universe is Jonathan Joseph living in? For example, here's a price comparison on
Athlon and Durons from the lowest price dealer in San Diego, chipsandmemory.com :
Processor 1/26/01 2/3/01
Duron 750 69 69
Duron 800 79 79
Duron 850 99 99
Athlon 900 149 149
Athlon 950 169 189
Athlon 1000 179 199
Athlon 1100 229 259
Athlon 1200 n.a. 299

He also ignores the fact that, according to SIA data, December was a better month than
January
. Here's the data
Year Over Year Year Over Year
One-Month Change 3 Month (Moving Average) Change
November: 17.4% 28%
December: 22.6% 23%

Instead, Jonathan Joseph only reports on the 3 month rolling average, which, of course
will lag behind the monthly numbers:
* Overall December SIA data showed shipments slowed
from 28% yoy growth in November to 22% in December,
the fourth month of deceleration. We expect
shipments to continue slowing at least through
August of this year.

Not only does he only quote the 3-month average data, but he
misquotes the December data, saying its 22% when Rothdeutsch
quoted the figure as 23%.
