I agree that that is what they think, the "merit" is a cover for discrimination. On the other hand, we are not talking the individual's worth here, which is beside the point in hiring, but the standards they have to adhere to in order to be hired. Such phenomena as "race norming" achieve racial balance by weighing the test results of applicants to certain position differently based on race. In fire departments throughout the country, fitness standards have been lowered in order to admit more females. For example, a man has to be able to carry someone from a building, a woman, generally lacking comparable upper body strength, merely has to be able to drag them, although that is a riskier, more time consuming operation, and more fraught with obtructions. Anyway, it is one thing to identify unreasonable standards that seem arbitrary and designed for exclusion, and another to attack and/or eliminate reasonable standards........
