Sharon's victory will be so crushing there will be no doubt who won - immediately. He will then have to put together a governing coalition in the parliament which could take weeks.

People aren't frightened of war as far as I can see. They don't think the arab countries could be that dumb again. They are just fed up with Barak and Sharon happens to be Likud leader (Netanyahu was removed pending corruption investigations that were since dismissed) and Netanyahu decided not to run against him in the primary. Netanyahu didn't believe that if he won he could put a stable coalition together without a Knesset election which Barak and Shas (North African Religious Party) engineered to avoid.

I see the conflict over Jerusalem to be more in the political sphere than the religious. It is wrong to see Jerusalem as just a "holy city". It was the political capital of the Jewish Kingdom as well as the site of the temple. The two things are tied up together. To the muslims it is a holy location, but also the city they fought the crusaders over for 2 centuries and as the most important city in Palestine historically the one that they see as the capital of a potential palestinian state.

Though I am relatively right wing I don't take a reductionist view of these things and see the Palestinian viewpoint on these things too.
