It depends on the actual size. I have seen people who have had to lift up the arm rest....

On a flight from Little Rock to Washington National I was stuck with the window seat in the last row of the plane. The plane was full and the guy in the middle was so large he couldn’t get his seatbelt on and had to ask the stewardess for a seatbelt extender. Good thing I’m not claustrophobic.

I currently fly from DC to NYC and back about twice a month taking the Delta Shuttle which like South West has festival seating. I’ve noticed the same subtle racism (subtle to me, maybe, probably not subtle to those who deal with it everyday) and I have made seating choices based on the likelihood that the middle seat in that row is most likely to stay open on a crowded flight. The last person I shared a row with worked for a major news network and had some interesting stories to tell.
