We will soon start seeing very large DRAM caches on the same substrate as the core. This will eliminate DRAM latency (and bandwidth) issues. Sony PS2 already does this (it has a 2560 bit wide embedded DRAM bus), and the technique will become prevalent over the next few years.

Answering your question- no Athlon will not run out of steam. It is a great design.

How will Sledgehammer solve the memory latency bottleneck?

If they move the northbridge to the CPU die, it should reduce the latency.
