David, Japan's bank loan growth only peaked a full six years after the bursting of their bubble due to the BoJ's extra-easy monetary policy. the bank stocks in fact outperformed the Nikkei from late '90 to late '93, as they managed to paper over the problems for a while. but they were obliterated thereafter.

so initially, the markets in Japan were betting on a successful reflation too....
