Metricom Shares Fall After Company Says It May Run Out of Money

San Jose, California, Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Metricom Inc.
shares plunged as much as 40 percent after the wireless-Internet
service provider said it may run out of money and is preparing to
scale back expansion plans and cut jobs.
Shares of the San Jose, California-based company fell $3.50,
or 34 percent, to $6.88 in midmorning trading. Earlier, they
touched $6.22. They had lost 89 percent of their value in the past
year.
Metricom has enough money to operate and build out its
network into the second half of the year, the company said in a
press release distributed by Business Wire. Without financing, the
company won't be able to continue operations, the statement said.
Officials at Metricom didn't immediately return a phone call
seeking comment. The company had $18.5 million in sales in 1999.
