Actually, you say "congratulations" as soon as it is ascertained that she is pregnant, generally within a month or two of conception. You have no doubt that the embryo will, uninterrupted, become an infant son or daughter, and therefore that it is a human life at a particular stage of development. You have no doubt that it is an organism distinct from, if dependent on, its mother. That is why even first term abortions should not be legal, even if they are treated less severely than late term abortions. Regardless of stage of development or condition of dependency, the reasons for terminating a human life should be highly restrictive, for example, rape, incest, and preservation of the mother's life. To cavalierly dispose of human life, even at a primitive stage of development, cheapens it and treats it with contempt, which becomes pervasive in our culture. Sentience is not the issue: pain is transient, and even animals that we slaughter for food feel pain. Upholding the dignity and value of human life is the issue. It is rather like the attempt to treat every homicide the same, regardless of whether the victim is a bum or elderly. We don't care if the person is socially useful or close to death anyway, it is simply wrong to take a human life without a highly circumscribed rationale, like self- defense.......

CONGRATULATIONS
Sure I congratulate them. I am happy for the friend. I'm not congratulating the fetus because I don't know the fetus. The big point is they are trying to have a baby. If circumstances change, say for example they discover the baby will be born with lukemia and die at puberty, then they may want to stop the pregnancy and try again. It's their choice.
