Demand for Cell Phone LCD's on the Rise

In today's market, liquid crystal display products have mostly been produced for notebook personal computers, but the new trend is focused on products modified for mobile phone sets. According to Japanese daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the production of larger, ten inch-sized LCD's is expected to rise this year by 8.85% and to reach a total of US$15.8 billion in value, while the production of smaller sized LCD's will jump 46.6% to a total of US$3.7 billion.

The LCD products for notebook PC's usually occupy 63% of the total global LCD market. The growth rate of large-sized LCD products has decreased due to an expanding supply and heated competition among the global manufacturers to cut prices. Contrary to the large-sized LCD market, the medium and small-sized market is expected grow by 20% in the next five years. Additionally, global sales of the small and medium-sized LCD's are expected to reach US$10.4 billion in 2003. If sales reach this amount, it will mark the largest sales in LCD history.

Beginning this year, the small and medium-sized LCD market is expected to expand as manufacturers of mobile phone sets in Japan, Korea and Europe plan to introduce color products. In the current global market, prices of 1.4 inch and 1.5 inch black and white LCD products for mobile phone sets remain below US$10 per unit, but color equivalents have been traded at US$40-60. Industry observers predict that handsets with built-in color monitors will occupy 28% of the total mobile phone supply, which is equivalent to 200.4 million units.
