no, i haven't run across symantec NetDetect (sounds like something a tuna could use). possibly i don't see this feature because i have automatic liveupdate disabled.

i do see a LiveReg in the liveupdate list.... i'm guessing this is for registering product online? wow. they sure can inundate us with bells and whistles, huh? <g3>

well, that would be nice. maybe you're right. there are different levels of lessons to be learned from an experience such as the one i just went through. aside from the obvious technical data that can be derived, one can also see that nearly all software problems can be resolved. imo, much of it has to do with attitude and approach.
