including that Perl-coding skill, which is, surprisingly, in great demand
in NON Internet applications.

I use it mostly for internet applications, like tracking the posting activity here, or zapping spam back when it was possible to delete messages via URLs, but do find myself something stopping in the middle of doing something in QuickBasic when I realize I can do it a lot easier in PERL. It's amazing for file-crunching.

If you haven't before, now might be a great time to try contracting.

Been there. Was a contract consultant for about 12 years prior to hooking up with Brad and Jeff. They even brought me on as a contractor in the beginning. This was my first "normal job" in a very long time. I was making 6 figures as a consultant (but was getting burned out on it) and took a huge pay cut because I loved the site and the job and believed in the company that hired me (Go2Net), figuring options would more than make up for the salary.

I could never go back to programming for a living, though. I love doing it when I *want* to for my own purposes or for something quick that interests me. Despise it when I *have* to for someone else.

believe me, you are in a happier position than those you left behind.

I whole-heartedly agree.
