JDSU and SDLI have been somewhat cagey about the details. I believe, however, that there remains (right now at least) an electronic component on the chip as well. This is what Schifres calls hybridization. Judging from his remarks and those of Josef, they are moving away from the hybrid. But size and efficiency come into play. The important thing is the gathering multiple functions on a single integrated chip where before they used to have separate components or subassemblies they strung together.

I suspect we will be hearing more details once they settle down like an old married couple.
