It appears that politicians and voters on both sides of the aisle are oblivious to this.
Reagan would have been happy to cut spending. Trouble was that the Dems didn't want their pet programs cut so nothing got cut.
Try balancing the budget with the likes of Gephart and Teddy Kennedy in the mix.

I agree with the idea of paying back a lot of the debt. I think we should do so by restraining government spending. (Actually I think we should do so by cutting the spending but I don't think this is likely.)
