SAN FRANCISCO -- During a conference here, Motorola Inc. projected that the worldwide wireless handset market would grow 30-to-40% in 2001, thanks in part to a pick up in demand for new data services, like third-generation (3G) networks.

In total, the wireless handset market in 2001 is projected to reach 525 million to 575 million units, said Robert Stozek, director of the Advanced Network Product Group at Motorola. He estimated unit shipments at 410 million to 420 million in 2000.

"Our projections are on the low side of 500 million units for 2000," said Stozek in an interview after his presentation at the Banc of America Securities conference in San Francisco. "Nokia and Ericsson are projecting between 500-to-550 million units. We are all converging on [a consensus of] 525 million units."

Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia and other cellular phone makers are banking on wireless data services and other technologies to jumpstart the growth in handsets in the coming year.

From 2001 to 2006, the compound annual growth rate of second-generation (2G) networks and systems are projected to be flat, Stozek said. In comparison, the growth rate for 3G-enabled products is projected to be about 70%, he said.

"In 2001, 3G is going to be a small part of the business," he said. "But 3G will surpass 2G in terms of shipments in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, 3G will represent 70% of product shipments," he predicted.
