out of Sumer
~Jody Aliesan

(two words left to us
from the oldest writing:
Eden and abyss
)

sometimes abyss comes before Eden
dark shadow gorge cliffwalls too steep
too deep to see bottom even lying belly down
head hanging over verge vapors rise
from somewhere below breath of mirror face
looking up from other side tunnel end
crevice edge crack of doom

low thunder rolls

up desert from the east
moon's shadow rushes huge across the land
strikes from behind us shrieking
both horizons orange
between them in an indigo sky

black disk hanging
white hair writhing
scalp blood glittering

around us silver ashes falling
shadow lifts sweeps suddenly away leaves us
grasping on the rim black faceless face
opens blinding white now
nothing will ever be the same

is this where we look for the garden

climbing down steep walls after first step
handholds appear scrawny shrub roots
after dead end chimneys opening on nothing
now hand foot pressure sideways down
inch by inch feet find rock find earth
after nights spent on ledges listening
to body water rolling into silence
now soft mist echo of a stream in trees

we are never happier than when we are happy again
