Digital Island Awarded Major Patent for Key Internet Content Delivery Inventions
Broad-Based Award Recognizes Digital Island Technology as Being at the Heart of Improving the Efficiency of the Internet
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2001-- Digital Island, Inc. (Nasdaq:ISLD - news) announced today that it has been awarded United States Patent No. 6,185,598 covering aspects of Digital Island's broad-based inventions that improve the speed and efficiency of delivering digital content over the Internet.

The patent discloses Digital Island's key and pioneering approaches to improving Web site performance by delivering content from a globally distributed network of servers at the edge of the Internet. Using the invention disclosed by this newly issued patent, Digital Island's network and its Footprint® service improve the performance of websites from 30 percent to over 100 percent. The patent is based on the pioneering work of David Farber, Digital Island's chief system strategist, and Andrew Swart, its vice president of engineering, and its issuance recognizes Digital Island's early contributions to the areas of Internet content delivery.

The Patent and Trademark Office allowed twenty-one claims, and Digital Island has a number of additional claims still pending in related applications. In addition, Digital Island has related patent applications pending in Europe and elsewhere which it fully expects to be issuing soon.
