Gone for good; get real. It may take yrs to clean up and 50 yrs to get back to a pristene state but gone for good is ridiculous. How long did you plan on living? And as much as we want to hate oil, oil is one of the staples of our life. Eliminating Anwar won't eliminate cars. It will just mean that we will go to an alternative power source earlier, but who can say what that alternative will be and whether it will do less damage to the enviroment. I don't know, do you? What? Is the word, conserve, not a part of you all's vocabulary? Some official was saying the other day that if Californians reduced their energy consumption by 10 or 15%, there would not be a shortage nor a crisis. Sure I can understand that if you can understand that without pesticides, we in the U S would be starving just like the people in Tanzanina. Altered corn and other crops could reduce our dependence upon these pesticides such that overall the enviroment will be better off. If enough species die off, we won't have to worry about growing any corn whether its altered, mutated or normal. Three summers ago there were not enough bees in WI to pollinate the fruit trees...they had to import them. This is becoming less of an unusual event.Using the rails to ship freight is a possibility; but except for selected corridors; high speed rail has a far poorer chance of being accepted that that missle system does. People don't like mass transit. Period. Glad to see you have an open mind. First, I was not talking about mass transit..that's typically buses, light rail and trolleys (some heavy rail in subways and commuter trains) used in intracity commuting. I was talking inter city lines. Ridership has been growing overall for ten years. On several selected lines, ridership is going through the roof. If you provide good equipment, good services, and frequent arrivals and departures, they will come.Look at Britian. Britian has a great bus system, but it is dying. Look at BART. Even Japan's high speed trains are broke. At least star wars might have a definable cost. Rail could be the mother of all sinkholes with all of these fancy trains and nobody to ride them. They are not broke...most lines require annual operating subsidies....the savings in not having to build new roads, the improvement in air quality and the reduced use of energy [to name a few benefits] offset the operating subsidy payments. ted
