EMC was involved in the early HDTV trials with the likes of Lucent and Alcatel. Celerra is actually based on video server technology originally developed at Digital. The Digital Bitcasting acquisition gave them the MPEG technology in RealNetworks and the Avalon acquisition gave them a broadcast-quality operating system for large object files stored on multiple data formats (disk, optical, tape).

They've also identified medical imaging as a discrete market that could be commercialized faster than the other markets because it directly addresses the perennial cost conundrums in the healthcare industry. I guess the assignment of the Lucent dude, who reports directly to Joe Tucci, is to put it all together.

Omniscient? Now, that's heavy!
