I try to read more than one paper every day, but I've been fighting a cold so I don't know how other journalists responded. I think Mr. Auliffe could do a wonderful job. Since he is a great fund raiser, he could use the money in very constructive ways. If it is legal, perhaps the Democratic party could sponsor classes that would teach people how to vote. These classes could be taught through community college programs or through the public schools but they should be taught by professionals who are not affiliated with the Democratic party or the Republican party either. I've thought about racial profiling a little. Remember Ms. Whitman, one of Bush's cabinet appointees, searched a black person in New Jersey. She regretted it, but it certainly goes to show that she can't think on her feet! As far as racial profiling goes,I don't know what has happened but somehow we've fallen into the gutter when we think about others who do not look exactly like us. You see this on SI because people verbally, attack others on the basis of their political party affiliation. Either you are a Democrat or you are a Republican. Either you are a liberal or you are a conservative. I'll tell you a funny story. Since we lived outside of the United States for many years, I wasn't sure what people meant when they designated others as conservatives or liberals. We were at a dinner party. The hosts were Republicans, and somehow the talk got around to liberals and conservatives. I asked the host, "how do you tell the difference between a liberal and a conservative?" The host was stunned for a few seconds. Then he responded that a liberal doesn't care about the upkeep of his property which included the landscaping. I took it to mean that the liberal didn't care about the environment! I said, "well I always thought it was the other way around. I thought the liberals were the ones who were concerned about the environment." The other dinner guests roared with laughter! I'm not sure how the racial profiling started, but it is a serious problem. There was a story on the news a few weeks ago about a black family that lived in a predominately white area of Tacoma, WA. The son got out of the car, and walked up the steps to the front door when a policeman stopped him, and asked him what he was doing in the neighborhood. The police here are trying to correct the problem. Still, various government agencies try to profile people. They do this at the airport. I've been stopped twice when I traveled alone, and I believe I was stopped unjustly. The people who do the profiling needed a quota to fill, in my opinion, and that is why I believe I was stopped. One time, I flew back to the States ahead of my husband from Hong Kong. We had been scuba diving in the South China Seas. I don't think I look like a terrorist, and I'm sure the people at the check-in desk encounter many scuba divers. Yet, they pulled me behind the counter, went through my luggage, questioned me about a flash light for diving. ( They are common.) I was in shock. And they did this without any concern for my personal belongings. My purse, passport, money etc. were still outside the gate at the counter. Anyone could have walked off with my purse. As long as a magazine like Southern Partisan flourishes, I believe it will be difficult to change people's opinions about racism and racial profiling. There was a story on the news tonight about some kids in Kansas who might have attempted to harm people at a public school. The photos on tv showed skull and crossbones and there was, I believe, a confederate flag in the background.
