Hey, this talks pretty well to the situation of CNBC & gold. They can mention the down for gold but never the up:

The "Fourth Branch" of Government
The Puerile Hucksters of the News Media
by Peter Topolewski
In a vain misrepresentation, that is what the media call themselves: the "Fourth Branch" of government. A nifty bit of fantasizing meant to make us feel they exist solely for the people and removed from the pull of profit. Charlatans I say, and what's more ones who've performed their hucksterisms so poorly they now call in to question the very purpose of news gathering.

The original job description – and the one the media even yet allege to fulfill – was simple enough:

1. Report the facts
2. Choose which facts to report (*)

On the power of task number 1 the media rose above the people and into the clouds. The pursuit of fact detached them from appetites and inclinations. Soaring above the ignoble they crowned themselves arbiters of truth – disinterested in opinion and unable to opine but always zeroed in like a laser on facts. They saw themselves performing a noble, impersonal service for the good of those who cannot provide it to themselves, and so they rightly christened themselves the Fourth Branch of Government.
