SAN DIEGO, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move to extend the company's wireless vision of on-demand access to digital music at any hour and from any location, MP3.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: MPPP - news) today announced a developer relationship with QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news). MP3.com will work to create an application compatible with QUALCOMM's new Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) applications platform, potentially enabling the wireless delivery of digital music. The BREW platform enables developers to create applications that operate on all handsets with QUALCOMM Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) integrated circuits.
``The next step for digital music is mobility. Artists and music fans have told us they are looking for the day when music will be delivered beyond the desktop to wireless devices. We're building the technologies that will be instrumental in making this vision a reality,'' said Michael Robertson, chairman and chief executive officer of MP3.com (www.mp3.com). ``QUALCOMM is truly an industry leader, and by working together to develop a wireless application for digital music, MP3.com is continuing our strategy for providing consumers with access to their music whenever and wherever they want it.''
``QUALCOMM is pleased to have MP3.com as a core application developer partner in the BREW environment,'' said Peggy Johnson, QUALCOMM senior vice president and general manager of QUALCOMM Internet Services. ``The partnership with MP3.com represents a significant step both in enriching consumers' experience with the wireless Internet and in bringing personalized music to people wherever they may be. Carriers have expressed significant interest in adding music to their service offerings and MP3.com has the technology, business models and user base to deliver and grow these services.''
MP3.com's developer relationship with QUALCOMM is expected to enhance the company's recently announced Music InterOperating System (IOS), which is designed to bring all elements of the music industry together for the first time. The relationship continues the company's ongoing efforts to extend music IOS to wireless device manufacturers and wireless carriers.
