Corvis Unveils New Class of Next Generation Optical Transport Products for Repeaterless Terrestrial and Undersea Festoon Links
Corvis CorWave XL and CorWave XF Mark First Product Introduction of Corvis' Comprehensive Strategy to Extend its Next Generation Optical Networking Capabilities
COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2001-- Corvis Corporation (NASDAQ:CORV - news), the only company delivering intelligent all-optical networking solutions,
today announced the launch of its new class of next-generation optical products for repeaterless terrestrial and undersea festoon regional markets. The CorWave(TM) XL and
CorWave(TM) XF products will deliver ultra-high capacity for terrestrial (XL) and festoon (XF) links, increasing network capacity and reliability, and cutting operational expenses
for carriers.

These products are being introduced as an integral part of Corvis' strategy to deliver a suite of new products to address the requirements of next-generation optical services networks.
Corvis is addressing service provider needs to greatly enhance their transport and switching capacity while introducing new levels of network and service management.

``Building on our reputation as the leader in the optical networking space, we are proud to introduce a disruptive technology that meets the demands of the emerging repeaterless link
market segment,'' said Dr. David Huber, President and CEO of Corvis. ``These products complement our CorWave product suite, developed to make carriers more competitive.''

Consistent with its long-term growth strategy, Corvis is expanding the CorWave product suite to address a broader range of applications in existing networks and to open up new
market opportunities. The offering encompasses next-generation optical networking solutions for high capacity, all-optical switching, ultra-long-distance and regional transport with
integrated network management.

CorWave XL (Terrestrial) and CorWave XF (Festoon)

Both CorWave XL and CorWave XF products utilize Corvis' proprietary Raman Amplification technology, enabling carriers to transmit up to 800 gigabits per fiber for distances as
long as 350 km without the use of in-line amplifiers. Eliminating in-line amplifiers in a regional point-to-point network cuts operational costs dramatically, speeds regional network
deployment and helps new and emerging carriers to produce revenue more rapidly. The Corvis CorManager Network Management System manages both products, as well as all
currently deployed CorWave products.

The CorWave XF festoon product offers point-to-point links for mainland-to-island and island-to-island spans as well as multiple links along coastlines. This system can be fully
integrated with the Corvis all-optical network. Both products will be available in the second quarter of 2001.

``Corvis is taking a leadership role in advancing new applications for its state-of-the-art technology,'' said Andrew McCormick, senior analyst, Aberdeen Group. ``By being the first
to commercialize Raman amplification, Corvis can now create very long links to connect geographical regions separated by bodies of water, such as those in Europe and Asia-Pacific,
as well as countries with long coastlines including those in Latin America. By no longer having to sink amplifiers in the ocean, carriers serving those regions can reduce both the
capital and operational expenses of building their networks. This should accelerate Corvis' move into new geographical markets and help expand its customer base.''

All-optical network solutions are widely acknowledged in the industry as being necessary to accommodate rapidly growing traffic demands for both existing and emerging service
providers. Service providers will realize the benefits of scalability and cost-savings enabled by Corvis' leading edge optical technology as their networks grow. Corvis is extending its
leadership role in all-optical networking by offering new and enhanced products to existing and emerging carriers. Now service providers can harness their regional and nationwide
backbone networks to offer enhanced edge services such as wavelength leasing.

Service providers can leverage the benefits of optical networks to rapidly provision new services and features such as wavelength on demand, optical protection and restoration and
dynamic service level agreements.
