Morning B
A lot of good questions. I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. I don't feel it is within our ability to discern whether or not your friend was saved. It would be presumptuous of me. In cases where a person has made a profession of faith I think it best to leave it to God to judge(He knows our true, thoughts and intentions). It would be easy perhaps, to say he was not, based on his actions, but I hesitate to do that. There are however, many who have only a "said faith". Generally the mark of a true Christian is not that they don't fall down. Rather it is that they don't stay down. Like the prodigal son, they will return to the father and seek forgiveness.

Judas was called but not chosen. Jesus described him as a son of perdition(Jn 17:12), indicating his destiny, and says it would have been better for him if he had never been born. (Matt 26:24) I think Judas serves as a warning to us all that we cannot tell from the outward appearances just what is in a man's heart. I think we can know our own hearts and can have assurance of our salvation, but if we are not being consistently conformed into the likeness of Christ then we have reason to doubt the genuineness of our faith. I like what MacArthur says "it's not the perfection of your life, but the direction of your life" that leads us to assurance.

Have a most blessed day.
