CBB,
You state that the reason you are for abortion is that it is not traumatic for the mother. I have no official statistics to back up what I am saying, but I disagree with you. I could line up women for miles who have had abortions who would after the fact consider it to have been traumatic. I am sure that you could line up a similar group of women that believe the event to have not be traumatic. I have sat in the waiting rooms of an abortion clinic, I seen the women leaving...sobbing. Do you think the only reason for those tears is physical pain? In your line of women believing the event to be non-traumatic......I would ask them a few questions. I would suspect that if an abortion is such a nonevent for those women.....why do I not see them laughing and making jokes about it. Why do I think that most can tell you when they had the abortion and approximately what day their child was to be born? I am not saying that these woman would necessarily change their mind about having had the abortion. I am just saying, I have seen the after effects of abortion on many women. If one acknowledges Post traumatic stress disorder, there is a confirmed high number of incidents of such, in post-abortive women. Technically speaking, BTW, abortion does fit the dictionary definition of trauma. My point being, to say that abortion is not traumatic to the woman is an over-generalized statement.

I have seen both extremes in post-abortive women, some will adamantly defend the right to have an abortion. In some of those women the conviction is so strong because it helps them to cope by the abortion being legal. I have seen women who have had abortions that would advise against it based on the impact it has had on their life. Abortion probably stirs up more mixed emotions than any other subject known to mankind. One more question.....if I may. You state....."terminating an early pregnancy is not traumatic for the mother. " please explain to me...so I understand.....what makes the woman that aborted her fetus a mother, if that fetus was not a child??"I am in agreement with you on the extremes on this issue. As with most controversial issues, the extremes do not give a true picture of the issue or the people who have opposing middle ground stances on the issue. Abortion is no different in that respect. Either extreme takes away from the validity of the arguments presented by the more rational middle ground views. Let me give you and example. A few years back there was a proposed Daycare to be put in the neighborhood. It was in violation of many of the area codes. I opposed the daycare, as did many of the other neighbors. We had a council meeting and an opportunity to express our reasons. One woman showed up.....opposing the daycare. Unfortunately she showed up drunk and announced her reason for signing the petition was that she would no longer be able to sun bathe nude in her back yard. Her extreme and irrational statements reflected negatively on the entire group of people opposed to the daycare. I could now throw a stone from my yard, into the yard of the day care.

Again, I am in agreement with you on the issue of opposite extremes.

I do have another question.....you state...80 percent of Americans are in the middleAm I correct in thinking your are stating that 80% of the people are in favor of abortion?? Do you have a source for your statistics???

The views you express are both moderate and sensible. I have a 2 year old niece, born premature (1100 grams) due to toxemia who is now mostly "caught up" to her age. It still seems a bit of a miracle but in fact 90+% survive in this situation.

The extreme views hinder any meaningful legal or medical action and this is beginning to look like our own ME crisis. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail if moderates move into the arena.
