Robert, excellent thinking.I agree. At one time.....the whole Naz hung on CSCO's lips.
It is no longer so. With JNPR taking 30% of market
it tells you that CSCO's R & D dept is on shaky grounds.
So you can no longer be a leader if somebody in 12 - 18 months takes 30%
of market share from you, I would think.

Furthemore, anybody that has spent more than 30 minutes
looking at all the telecom situation must be/ is aware
that we are in a big transition phase from
silicon/electron to optical/photon.

Thus the whole infrastructure of the web changes.

I would submit to you that the big Institutions know
that
*the world is a single market now.
*we have 3 aereas of activity: US, Europe & Asia.
*all 3 are HOT HOT HOT on e-commerce, in particular B2B
* the B2C is frosting on the cake; much less

Theyknow that this is exploding , regardless of what is
happening to MaBell/ATT and old LU.

It is called creative destruction.

CSCO needs to do more of that creative destruction.
Destroy the old and create the new.
If it does not, it will be taken over by
previous little unknowns called JNPR, NT,ALA...and JDSU???

:-)

Cisco does not have the best equipment anymore. Ciena, Juniper and NT are making inroads, and the recent dip in Cisco's stock may be the beginning of their transition to Lucent-status....

I don't it will get to Lucent-status. However, its importance may be less in years ahead. It is very strong in enterprise market.

NT, JNPR, JDSU, CIEN and some of the communication chip stocks like AMCC, VTSS maybe the market leaders of tomorrow, once this business activity picks up (which may be happening right now or in the near future).
