Jim,

DDR is a "tweener" technology. It is not a subsystem design like RDRAM. Its lifespan is limited. Its most notable success has been in graphics cards.

You may be surprised to find out that most engineers are fairly oblivious to marketing rhetoric. Generally they look more at issues affecting price and performance.

Fast Page was a pretty big deal when it came out. It was replaced by EDO, which was in turn replaced by SDRAM, which is now being replaced by DDR.

You are correct that DDR will be replaced by a different technology someday.

I've been thinking a lot about embedded DRAM recently, and am about to propose a fairly radical embedded CPU memory architecture.
