Rick,

Re: Storage/EMC

Initially bullish for EMC, as they have indicated with their forecasts. The demand for storage will increase exponentially. However, there is a sea change in storage, architecturally. NAS is the current trend, moving from storage directly attached to the resident processor(server/mainframe) out to the network. The next possible phase would be to move the data closer to the user via multiple copies on caching devices and leave a resident copy on JBOD(Just a Bunch of Disk). I've lost touch with the technology since I worked with it, but the idea at a high level goes something like this:

NTAP NetCache/Filer hybrids delivering cached copies of data to users on their 1x/hdr devices throughout a worldwide network. Cheap IBM/Hitachi disk back home attached to the "big iron" house the data. High priced EMC Symmetrix....odd man out. We know FUD campaigns preceed major events, be they negotiations or technology shifts. EMC has been on a major, full-court FUD press the last few weeks. IMHO, their sad example of a competitive product is shot and they realize the movement of data away from the source is quite disruptive to their plan.

.....if NTAP misses tomorrow, ignore all of the above.<gg>

PS DownSouth, Please correct the above at will.

PSS I consider this On-Topic, as delivering large chunks of data without delay to mobile devices is one of several critical requirements for a BOOMING wireless data market.
