Server shipments for 2000 reached 3.9 million units, according to research by U.S. Gartner Dataquest Inc.. During the fourth quarter 2000, worldwide server shipments totaled 1.1 million, which represented a 21 percent increase from the same time in 1999. Adequate component supplies and robust growth in the market for Intel Corp. architecture (IA) servers boosted shipments worldwide, said Shahin Naftchi, a senior analyst for servers and workstations for Gartner Dataquest, in a statement. Sun Microsystems Inc. and Dell Computer Corp. experienced the strongest unit increases, with growth rates of 61 percent and 42 percent, respectively, during 2000, according to the study. Compaq Computer Corp., meanwhile, surpassed the 1 million mark in server unit shipments for 2000 and held 27.1 percent of the overall market, the top position in the server market, according to the statement. IBM held the second position in the market, shipping 658,287 server units, while Dell came in third with shipments of 573,219 units, the study said. Although the U.S. economy soured a bit during the fiscal fourth quarter, the U.S. market for servers grew 32 percent year-over- year, according to the study. Most of the growth was sparked by online business and a resulting demand for front-end Web servers, Web application servers and database servers, said Jeffrey Hewitt, principal analyst covering servers for Gartner Dataquest's Computing Platform, in the statement. Typical server purchasing cycles are two quarters and it will take that time before the real impact of the U.S. economy's slowdown on the server market will be known, he said.
