RE:"What you don't seem to understand is that people won't make changes that degrade the quality of their lives. It is foolish to try."

Man. I thought it was you that didn't understand that. I understand it perfectly. Strangely enough you seem to think that you do not effect the ecology.

RE:"How much gas and time is wasted because of asynchronous traffic lights? Fixing the traffic lights in big cities would produce a large gas savings, and make people's lives better."

What I'm trying to tell you is that we have an overpopulation/overconsumption problem. Synchronizing lights makes perfect sense but when an area becomes too crowded the traffic departments desynchronize the lights to slow down the traffic. They add speed bumps to slow down the traffic. They add stop signs to slow down the traffic...
They ARE NOT thinking of energy conservation.
Still, some cities still synchronize the lights. They have done this for 50+ years.

RE:"There are many other similar solutions. Telecommuting, fast trains, etc..."

It's been proven that once gasoline gets cheap, carpooling, fast trains etc. head out the window.

RE:"Are you Catholic by any chance? You seem to believe that redemption must be painful."

No. Basically I've just been trying to get you to understand what the problem really is... When you do, you will have a better understanding of how to deal with it.
To many, any inconvienience is painful. Has nothing to do with redemption. Without some kind of rollbacks, any solution is merely a bandaid...
Generally, a free market will take care of some of it...
The government has to regulate the rest.
