PCCW Says Govt.'s 'Premium' Proposal to Affect 3G Auction Results

Quamnet News Service

Pacific Century CyberWorks (0008), which runs Hong Kong's second-largest mobile phone service by subscribers, warned that the government's proposal to ask existing mobile phone companies to pay a premium to renew their licenses will affect the results of the coming auction of third-generation (3G) licenses.

PCCW will team with Telstra Corp. to bid for a local 3G license, said Hubert Ng, head of its mobile phone operations. PCCW recently sold a 60 percent stake in the mobile phone business to Telstra.

Ng didn't say whether PCCW will support the government's controversial "premium" proposal, though. He just said the plan is still at a preliminary stage and subject to change.
