Nothing wrong with buying puts. Covering your downside is just as important as dreaming about your upside. I doubt if there is any safe have in stocks anymore. With T cutting the dividend, with some of the utilities almost in bankruptcy and no dividend.

What makes me mad about the CSCO fiasco is that today some investor will walk into a brokerage firm trying to figure out what to buy.

The broker will recommend CSCO because:
1) its at its lowest price in 18 months
2) its one of America's premier companies (whatever that means)
3) these companies always come back
4)You should buy CSCO because its the backbone of the internet.
5) you gotta buy'em when they are down (try Sunbeam)
6) Our research department has it as an outperform (outperform what???in which direction???)

And so the investor buys CSCO and gets a call from the broker every three months with some new "hot ideas".

Ten years later the investor figures out he could have better on his own using a discount broker and doing his own trading.
