How about one-way streets? The energy and travel time savings would be huge.

How would regular one way streets cause such a huge savings? If you have two parralel 2 way streets going between A and B and you change them to have one 1 way street in each direction you might possibly get a little more efficancy but I can't see how it would result in huge savings. Could you explain it?

What would seem to make sense to me is to have limited access highways with most lanes only going in whatever direction rush hour is (assumeing you are in an area that has a main direction for rush hour traffic, some places don't). Sometimes this is done with divided HOV lanes. I guess they have to close the lanes in between making a switch but I don't know how long they close them for.

As far as HOV goes if people did car pool a lot it could reduce traffic noticeably but most people don't want to car pool and many people have work locations or schedules that make car pooling difficult. In Norther Virginia the entire width of I66 is HOV inside the beltway (its HOV towards DC in the morning and away from DC in the evening). I have traveled that streach of 66 when it was HOV before and there are so few cars that it is actually wasting the road just causeing more congestion on Rt. 50 and other roads. Also most of the cars I saw where HOV violators. Every now and then they funnel everyone down to one lane and pull off all the HOV violators. Once I got caught and there were over 20 cars pulled over at the same time right by me.
