In the uplinked post (# 1989), I stated that NYNEX was a founding partner in the submarine cable venture, FLAG. The following passages serve to clear the memory on this point. They are historical references only, from:

etisalat.co.ae

"The US $ 1.5 billion project is founded by FLAG Ltd. , a consortium consisting of six entities: NYNEX Network Systems Co. in N.Y., Dallah Al Baraka Group in Saudi Arabia, Asian Investment Fund of Hong Kong, Telecom Holding Co. of Bangkok, Marubeni Corp. in Tokyo and Gulf Associates in N.Y. Two undersea cable network suppliers have been appointed to build the FLAG system. Both suppliers have extensive experience in providing undersea cable systems and are leading suppliers of undersea communications systems, including the new revolutionary optical amplifier that will ensure FLAG’s signal quality throughout the life of the cable system."

And here again:

vii.org which points to:

"FLAG (Fiber-optic Link Across the Globe) is a partnership between Nynex (USA), Gulf Associates (USA), Dallah Albaraka Group (Saudi Arabia) and Marubeni Corporation (Japan). In 1995, FLAG was pushing a proposal to connect African countries to its 31,000 km fiber-optic link from the UK to Japan. The FLAG proposal has an estimated cost of $800 million (Langworth, 1994)."
