By any chance, is the MB in your problem box a SOYO ?

I'm going through something similar right now on a new SOYO MB. It's a hardware conflict of some sort, the machine hangs if a program uses the sound card while I have two ethernet cards installed. If I pull the second ethernet out everything works correctly. I've tried about 4 different network cards, all with the same result. I can't replace the sound card because it's built-in and I have no free slots left.

I didn't see an IRQ conflict, but I got frustrated and gave up and am running with just one network card for now. I'll put a second card into a different box unless I get any flash of insight on solving the problem.
