30 is meaningless in reality, just a "hook" to provide an extra distribution area on the way down to support

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Texas Instruments said Thursday it hasn't changed its financial outlook since its quarterly conference call on Jan. 21.
Chief Financial Officer Bill Aylesworth also told a group of investors and fund managers at the Banc of America Technology Week conference that this is a "difficult environment for all of us," referring to an overall economic slowdown.

Aylesworth projected capital expenditures of $2.3 billion this year, down from $2.8 billion in 2000.

As well, TI (TXN: news, msgs) has eliminated overtime for employees in its manufacturing areas, yet has maintained its college new-hire program.

Aylesworth remarked that TI should be able to maintain margins in the high teens for the first quarter. Research and development, he said, will increase to $1.7 billion.

In its digital-subscriber-line business, TI is engaged with four of the top six consumer PC original equipment manufacturers. TI offers both programmable software and hardware options for DSL.

Looking ahead, Aylesworth said new wireless technologies will be an important part of the Texas-based company's business. TI will begin deployment of so-called third-generation wireless products in the second half of 2002, continuing into 2003 and 2004.
