to pat and the sdliers/jdsuers
from sirdar

lets keep this thread.

i've been reading this and jdsu's board for 5+ years and
owning shares. its been very fortunate for our family.

my basic understanding was that the communication system
had to go optical and that called for lasers.

i don't know if i was more smart or lucky, but whichever,
we're wealthy.

the future for sdli/jdsu is very promising.

While it is true a system can be configured to run on only Raman amplifiers, it would cost much more than one run with EDFAs (on a same-bandwidth basis)...so only in certain very limited circumstances, like coastal festooning...will it be the amplification scheme of choice. In most other cases, it will be used to broaden the optical bandwidth of the fiber...and will be used in tandem with EDFA, not in place of it...

I figured ultra-long haul was just one part of the network, and certainly not going to put a dent in EDFA's numbers. Glad to know they work in tandem.
