Sudan: Government welcomes US bill on lifting trade sanctions
Al-Ra'y al-Amm web site, Khartoum, in Arabic, 7 February

The government yesterday welcomed a bill presented to the American Congress to lift the trade sanctions imposed on some countries, including Sudan, Libya and Iran.

The external relations minister, Dr Mustafa Uthman Isma'il, described the intention to lift the sanctions as a "positive" and "valid" change.

Dr Isma'il reiterated that Sudan was not the only country that rejected sanctions and added that many international institutions concurred on the need to lift the sanctions after realizing their effects on the people.

Dr Isma'il stressed that Sudan rejected the principle of sanctions as it had negative affect on the people more than governments.
He told the press that the government was waiting for next April when the issue would be presented to the Security Council. He hoped Sudan would receive the support of the other countries in order to have the sanctions, which had been "unilaterally" imposed, lifted.
