Sneering has made many a career. Don't knock it. I've heard why nails still grow, but I forgot. Surprised?

but I'm gonna do that word origin search.

Back to our roots, so to speak.

I have found an answer. Alas, it begs another question. Pants is a plural, it is not itself a word. It is Pant Period. BUT, pant is short for pantaloonS. Why is the short of PantaloonS, pant and not pants???

Main Entry: pant
Function: noun
Etymology: short for pantaloons
Date: 1840
1 : an outer garment covering each leg separately and usually extending from the waist to the ankle -- usually used in plural
2 plural, chiefly British : men's underpants

Oh, and sadly (I think), if you were born before 1840 you couldn't wear PANTS and be dignified. You had to wear pantaloons. ick.
